NUNO FELTING
AN INTRODUCTION TO NUNO FELTING
Nuno felting is a fabric felting technique developed in the early 1990s . The name is derived from the Japanese word “nuno” meaning cloth. The technique bonds loose fibre, usually wool, into a sheer fabric such as silk gauze, creating a lightweight felt.
This is a slightly different style of felting where a fine luxurious fabric can be created. The nuno felting process is particularly suitable for creating lightweight fabrics used to make clothing.
By combining silk fabric with Superfine Merino wool, fibres are wet felted together resulting in a warm, beautiful, soft draping fabric. Both warm to wear and simply stunning in appearance where the fibres connect to the silk. The use of silk in the felt creates a fabric that will not stretch out of shape.
Totally unique items can be made with nuno felting. One off bespoke pieces such as coats, dresses, hats, arm warmers, hair bands, scarves, ponchos. The possibilities are endless…
