SHIBORI
AN INTRODUCTION TO SHIBORI
Shibori is a Japanese manual resist dyeing technique, which produces patterns on fabric. Many people will know this as tie dyeing or using a method of folds and resists tied into place to create a colour pattern.
Shibori with felt works on the same principal. Instead of creating the shapes with colour dyes the shapes are created with the wool fibres…
When the wool has been lightly felted so that it holds together, but is not too firm, a resist is inserted – these can be beads, buttons etc. These are tied into place and then the felting process can continue. Once the felting is complete the wool is left to dry and then the beads and buttons can be removed.
There are an infinite number of ways one can bind, stitch, fold, twist, or compress cloth for shibori, and each way results in very different patterns.Felt has a memory! It should hold the shape that it was felted into. It is then able to be handwashed and dried and stay in the shape it has been made into.
A magical process.
