ECO DYEING
AN INTRODUCTION TO ECO DYEING
Eco-dyeing is a method of printing with nature.
Using natural materials such as tree bark, berries and leaves in order to transfer a colour and pattern from the material onto a fabric creating a unique ‘gift from nature’…
A process of printing with natural elements on natural fabrics.
The natural materials are transferred onto silk, wool (protein fibres), cotton, linen (cellulose fibres) or some synthetic fabric. I tend to use the natural protein and cellulose fabrics.
The colour of the surrounding fabric dictated by what you have put into the dye bath. Logwood for purple, woad for blue, onion skins for a warm gold and so on. Natural mordants (dye fixatives) are used to bind the prints and colours to the fabric, making the print permanent and totally colourfast.
This is a bit of a sideline to felting. Many felters are also interested in eco-dyeing, maybe this is because it is also working with nature and natural processes.
Truly a gift from nature…
